Essential composting with Skaza

Growing up, I was always taught to be mindful of the way we consume—how we shop, how we travel, how we use water, and of course, how we deal with waste. Composting was always part of that lifestyle. At home we had a big compost bin in the backyard, and it felt satisfying to watch our kitchen scraps transform into something useful for the garden. But once Robert and I moved into an apartment, things got trickier. Tossing a banana peel on the compost pile wasn’t an option anymore, and I found myself missing that simple way of reducing waste.

For a long time, the idea of composting in the kitchen felt unrealistic. Most compost bins are either clunky, unattractive, or downright smelly—not exactly what you want in the heart of your home. That changed when I discovered the Skaza range of Bokashi composters. We started using the Bokashi Organko 2 in 2019 and loved how compact and stylish it was. But a few weeks ago we started using the Skaza Bokashi Essential, and I have to say—it has some big advantages that make it the perfect fit for our family of 4, and currently even six with my parents that are here.

The first thing you notice is its size: the Organko Essential holds 15.3 liters, compared to the 9.6 liters of the Organko 2. That extra capacity makes a real difference if you cook a lot at home or if you’re composting for a family instead of just one or two people. We will be able to go much longer between emptying it, which is super convenient. We’ve been using the Skaza Organko Essential for 2 1/2 weeks now and it’s still not entirely full, despite the large number of watermelons, bananas and oranges being consumed here by all six of us.

Another big plus: the airtight lid. This ensures the fermentation process happens exactly as it should—without any unwanted odors escaping. Honestly, even with it sitting in our kitchen, no one ever guesses it’s a compost bin.

And then there’s my favorite feature: the liquid is always ready. As your scraps ferment, the Organko Essential produces a nutrient-rich liquid. You can tap it off anytime—use it undiluted as a natural drain cleaner, or dilute it with water (about 1:20) to make an amazing fertilizer for your plants. Having this liquid “on demand” is such a game-changer. My plants (both indoor and in our garden) are thriving thanks to it!

Just like with the Organko 2, you add a scoop of Bokashi Bran every time you put food waste in the bin. The bran (a mix of bran, molasses, and beneficial microorganisms) helps with the fermentation and keeps everything fresh instead of rotting. We store our bran in a sealed container to keep the earthy smell contained, but once it’s in the bin, there’s absolutely no odor.

When the Essential is full (in a few days from now), we will let the fermented scraps rest for a couple of weeks before using them. We either bury them directly in the garden soil (where they break down super quickly) or add them to our larger outdoor compost pile. It’s incredibly satisfying to know that food waste that might otherwise end up in the trash is instead going back into the earth, nourishing our plants. Even though our first composting process with the Skaza Organko Essential is not entirely finished, I’m sure the compost will be topknotch, very similar to our previous Skaza composter. Can’t wait to add some fresh new post to our garden: some areas need some extra nourishment!

Clearly, the Skaza Organko Essential has a different look than the Bokashi Organko 2. It’s designed to be practical, but it’s still sleek enough to keep in the kitchen without feeling like an eyesore. For me, that’s important—when I choose items we use every day, they need to work well but also look good.

So if you’re curious about composting at home and want a system that’s easy to use, odor-free, and functional for families, I can wholeheartedly recommend the Skaza Bokashi Essential. Bigger capacity, airtight lid, liquid always ready—it ticks all the boxes.

You can find the Skaza Organko Essential online and in garden centers like Gamm Vert, Jardiland, Truffaut, and Nature & Découvertes here in France. Below you’ll find more special offers and discounts, so you can give it a try yourself.
