Don’t judge a book by its cover. Ever so often I’m disappointed when flipping through children’s books at Fnac. Why make an attractive cover with a boring inside? Why? This book called Malmok is a nice exception: the blue foil letters and pelican illustration make the cover look pretty, but the illustrations inside are even better. The book was written by Sjoerd Kuyper for 7-8 year olds and tells the story of a bird called Malmok. It’s very cute, but the visually-minded-me prefers looking at the penstrokes, colors and paper scraps by Dutch illustrator Annemarie van Haeringen. I simply love mixed media, strong colors and her very personal style.

  1. Yes i have many! And one of them is Annemarie van Haeringen :)
But also the work of Marit Törnquist steals my heart every time.

    1. Thanks for sharing your favorites Lein! The work of Marit looks like you would love it indeed! Very sweet and a bit mysterious too!

  2. That really looks like a great find! I don't have one favourite illustrator, but one I really like is Lisl Stich, she illustrated some german childrens's book classics and her style always reminds me of Jaques Tati. You can see it's not from today, but it's never old fashioned.

    1. Thanks for sharing one of your favorites, Lena! Her work looks very playful! And I see where you get the Jaques Tati reference ;) It's incredible how illustrators from books in our youth seem to mean so much today. They take a special place and some never ever become old fashioned :)

  3. I'm sitting here with Luca next to me, and we both exclaimed, wow! that is so cool! He says he likes Quentin Blake (of course), and I love Axel Scheffler (The Gruffalo, which I LOVE).

    1. Totally agree with Luca, Quentin Blake is one of the best. Annemarie's work even looks a tiny bit like his, right? Axel Scheffler's work is nice too, the eyes he draws on his characters are pretty hilarious!

  4. Such a fun idea to peek into children's books for inspiration. I never do that but I think I should start it! Lovely find!

  5. I love these!!! So beautiful! One of my favorites is Shel Silverstein, and his stories are great! The children's book section at The Strand is amazing for inspiration!

    1. Thanks for sharing one of your favorites Giannina! I didn't know Shel's work at all, does he also do color? Or only pen drawings? From his wiki, he also won a grammy for best country song hahaha! Did you grow up with his books?

  6. Gorgeous illustrations – I know exactly what you mean, that children's books often disappoint when you open them – this one is fab though. Have a great day sweets,
    Ax

    1. Merci Anya! It's so weird and a little sad isn't it? You expect the book to be as cool as the cover and then: total disappointment. Well anyway, hope you're having a good week! xx
